A mechanical seal refers to a device that is composed of at least a pair of end faces perpendicular to the axis of rotation, which are kept close to and slide relative to each other under the action of fluid pressure and the elastic force (or magnetic force) of the compensation mechanism and the cooperation of the auxiliary seal to prevent fluid leakage.

The mechanical seal is usually composed of a moving ring, a static ring, a compression element and a sealing element. Among them, the end faces of the moving ring and the static ring form a pair of friction pairs. The movable ring presses the end surface of the static ring against the end surface of the static ring by the pressure of the liquid in the sealing chamber, and generates an appropriate specific pressure on the end surfaces of the two rings and maintains an extremely thin liquid film to achieve the purpose of sealing. The compression element generates pressure, which can keep the end face of the pump in a state of non-operation, ensuring that the sealing medium does not leak, and preventing impurities from entering the sealing end face. The failure of mechanical seals is a common failure of chemical machinery. Once the seal fails, it will affect the normal progress of chemical production. It is the daily work of chemical equipment maintenance professionals to eliminate such failures.

The mechanical seal is mainly composed of the following three types of components:

1. Buffer compensation mechanism: It is composed of elastic elements (cylindrical spring, conical spring, wave plate spring, bellows, etc.).
2. Sealing end face: a pair of friction pairs composed of a moving ring and a static ring.
3. Auxiliary sealing ring: including moving ring sealing ring, static ring sealing ring, etc., in various forms, such as 0-ring, V-ring, etc.
